Buyers Love Circular Design: Let’s Talk About Why!

No, circular design doesn’t mean making products or packaging into circles or cylinders. It’s a sustainability approach that challenges the traditional linear model—where products are made, used, and thrown away. Instead, it focuses on designing for continual reuse, refurbishment, and recycling of materials. At Main Graphics, we embrace circular design to create solutions that minimize waste and maximize sustainability. Circular design aims to create a closed-loop system where resources are kept in use for as long as possible, significantly reducing environmental impact. Businesses have been moving toward circular design for some time as part of the larger trend toward sustainability. According to analysis by Business News Daily, online searches for sustainable products have nearly doubled over the past five years. A survey from McKinsey & Company found that 66% of all respondents (including 75% of millennial respondents) now consider sustainability when making a purchase. Circular design meets consumer demand, but it does more. It also saves you money by minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency. How to Incorporate Circular Design How can you incorporate circular design in your print and packaging materials?
  1. Use recycled materials. Choose paper, paperboard, and inks made from recycled materials or that are sustainably sourced.
  2. Think about the material’s “end of life” before you start designing. How will the printed material be disposed of? Ensure that all elements are recyclable. Lack of recyclability is one reason brands are moving away from packaging designs that laminate paper and plastic, for example, since lamination often makes those packages difficult if not impossible to recycle.
  3. Optimize size and format. Design print materials in a way that minimizes waste during production. This can mean using standard sizes that can be printed efficiently on larger sheets, thereby reducing scrap material.
  4. Encourage recycling. Consumers are often unsure about what can be recycled and what cannot. So add “Recycle me!” in your design where your customers can see it. People are more likely to recycle when it’s specifically labeled for recycling
Circular design is more than just a trend. It’s an evolution in the way businesses operate that can lead to increased consumer loyalty, cost savings, and a positive vibe with today’s buyers.
